Comments: Served in Phu Bai as CTR3 (1971-1972); Army show was awful, we invented Phu Bai stew (combined c-rats with anything from the care packages, cooked over makeshift campfire;
Danang 1972-1973 attached to Det B (from NCSP) while with VQ-1 aboard EC-121M and P-3B

Comments: CTR3 several tours to Camp Tien Sha, MRF, VQ-1 flights out of DaNang and Phu Bai, wounded in rocket/mortar attack at DaNang air base July 15, 1967. Literally moved around WITH FEW OR NO ORDERS running with Mobile Riverines one week and flying VQ-1 the next, COMSEC at Tien Sha and back and forth to the USS Tripoli for coordinated Amphibious Assaults. Only a few of us were in that short CT group that went ashore in the first LPH landing craft to monitor short range enemy radio. IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE THAT REMEMBERS ME or the group we were in. I believe a young Japanese-American (Lt. Oto / Ota ???) was our liaison officer.

The old buildings are gone and its hard to recognize that we were ever there. I plan another trip back this Oct,2014, It's really a great time and I'd sure like some company. Thanks and please get in touch with me.

07/10/2013  Name: Clayton Russell  E-mail: el.tio56@gmail.com Comments: Hello, I am friends with a combat veteran named Mark Slama, Recon, 5/60th 9 Infantry Division, who is currently living in Janesville, MN. He served aboard an armored personnel carrier in the Mekong Delta in 1967. His commanding officer was Lee Alley, which Mark states was ranked a 1st Lieutenant at the time and was present on the day Mark was wounded. His "home base" was Fire Support Base Cudgel at Dong Tam. Mark, along with 4 other individuals, was wounded on November 8th, 1967 by a booby trapped M26 frag grenade. This booby trap was tripped when these 5 soldiers crossed out of an open area, possibly rice patties, to just inside a tree line from which they had seen a few Vietnamese crossing through, carrying hoes or other plowing implements, a short time earlier. All 5 soldiers were medivaced out shortly thereafter. There were 3 stretcher cases, Mark being the second loaded aboard the helicopter, and two walking wounded. The 3 stretcher cases were laid in the chopper while the walking wounded stood on the struts.  The chopper pilot employed a very common, and equally extraordinary, manuever where he hovered just off the water, headed for a tree line and then at the last moment pulled up and cleared the trees. Mark and all aboard were then taken to the 3rd SURGICAL FIELD HOSPITAL. Possibly in Tan An (not sure about the spelling), or Ben Phuc/Binh Phouc. He has mentioned wanting to locate the pilot of the chopper that day. I would like to assist him in finding that chopper pilot and am asking for any and all help possible to try and locate this individual.

Comments: I WAS a EO3 Navy Seabee assigned to Camp Tien Sha fire dept. 1967/1968. IS THERE ANY MARINE THAT REMEMBERS THE FIRE TRUCK THAT WENT THROUGH YOUR LINE INTO A VILLIAGE BY THE DANANG AIRBASE IN A ATTEMPT TO PUT OUT A FIRE ON ONE OF YOUR PERSONNEL CARRIERS DURING TET. IT BLEW UP AS WE WERE DRIVING UP TO IT KILLING ANY SURVIVORS THAT WERE IN IT. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT THE NAME OF THE MARINE COMMANDING OFFICER THAT ASK ME AND MY CREW TO GO IN. HE DID NOT ORDER ME TO GO IN, HE ASK ME, AS THE VILLIAGE WAS FULL OF NVA. THE REASON I AM ASKING IS BECAUSE AFTER COMING BACK OUT HE TOLD ME THAT HE WAS GOING TO SEE TO IT THAT ME AND MY CREW WOULD GET A BRONZE STAR. WE NEVER DID HEAR ANY MORE ABOUT IT. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THIS FOR MYSELF, BUT FOR MY CREW. ESPECIALLY MY DRIVER WHO WAS MURDERED THE VERY NIGHT HE RETURNED HOME FROM NAM. ANY INFO MIGHT HELP. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SACRIFICES , AND WELCOME HOME.

Comments: I was at Camp Tien Sha 1968-1969 with Tien Sha Security (TSP) charged with perimeter security. We experienced rocket attacks and long tedious watches. The ammo dump got hit and went off for days, 500lb bombs make quite a racket. In-country R&R at China Beach surfing the waves and watching the big red Asian sun come up out of the China sea. Ron Washington was a pal who worked hard for his race. Fellow security pals were big Jim Kelly from NY, Paul Sustin from El Lay and many others. I would love to hear from anyone at that time. We guarded the Deep Water Piers and many towers to safeguard our fellow servicemen. I'm proud to have served and grateful to all the vets who answered their country.

Comments: I was assigned to the 1st Marine Division Public Works from March '68 to June '69. We were a small group of SeaBees who worked with civilian Koreans and some local Vietnamese in support of maintenance for the 1st Marine Division. I have never spoken with any one assigned to the unit since I left and would be interested in getting back in touch with anyone who served with the small unit.

Comments: I was at Monkey Mountain, Vietnam from Sep '66 through Oct '67, I was assigned as the NCOIC Communications Operations and also as the NCOIC MARS Station AI8AM. We had many volunteers from the Navy and Air Force who gladly served to help the troops make their calls home to their wives and family. It was a good time to provide phone patches and MARSGRAMS and was such an important service to help so many and give relief to their burdens.

Comments: I was on land assignment about a year, late 1966 to 1967 in Camp TienSha, Danang - at the base of Monkey Mountain. Fixing radios and electronics. Twelve on, twelve off. Climbed up into my top bunk one night after getting off duty and having a few beers, and a GROUND APE was already in it. Chased him out with the help of other guys in bunks (so I wouldn't shoot the ape instead), fell into bunk and went to sleep. Next morning, swollen all over, covered in welts and bites from ape's fleas and lice, ended up in infirmary 3 days. Does anyone remember me from that incident? Please get in touch! Dan

Comments:U.S. Navy Combat Photographer (NAV-4V; Det. Charlie). Thanks for this web site and the postings. It brings back memories [Many are sad, as reflected in the ones here]. Rather we like those memories or not; they are the facts, the history. I would be interested in hearing from other U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine photographers of that era. Good Luck To ALL. Thanks for your Military service.

Comments: I just wanted to say how poignant the poetry was and how it is the same whereever the wars take place. Our boys fought Angola and Rhodesia - both dirty wars, both with hidden agendas. My heart goes out to the soldiers out there (one of my friends was in Iraq). Be strong, one day there could be peace and hope for all who live in our world - whatever colour or creed they have. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and words and passion.

Comments: I served in the US Air Force at Dong Ha in 1969 until Typhoon Doris blew us away 1st of September. We spent a few weeks, maybe a bit more, salvaging what we could and staging it for transport down to Da Nang. I was one of the last out and went with the last load on a LST down the Cua Viet to the South China Sea – the sea was rocking and rolling pretty good at the time – and on down to Da Nang. I can’t remember the particular LST. Does anyone who served at Tien Sha remember this and what ship it was? If so, please send me whatever info you have or remember about it.

Comments: 282nd Assault Hel. Co. "Black Cats" 1/69 - 1/70. 2 jobs: crew chief on fire truck w/ MAG 16, door-gunner/ hueys (mostly medivacs and mail runs), the "Alley Cats" were the real combat vets. My idea of paradise: the extinct volcano - a naval radar base - CuLaoRe Island (now LySon, I think)a few miles off shore. Flying in beside the cliffs and waterfalls plunging to the clear blue sea will ease your mind. Hello to any of my marine MAG16 buddies - you guys couldn't buy hard liquor! so I shared my rations :-)! And to you Army buds - I'm too far gone to remember names but I think of you all and can see you faces still - hope you have had a good life. I certainly have. And those who gave all - see you again on the other side.
