Comments: I was with Brovo Troop, 1st. Squadran, 9th. Regiment, 1st. Cavalry Division, (airmoble), in 1967. The Blues as we were called, I was an infantryman, and a RTO (radio operator),for 3rd. platoon, 2nd. squad,(call sign Blue 3/2). I was occausionly platoon RTO for Dr. Rick, our platoon sergent in 1967. I have hidden my thoughts and feelings of the horrior, terrior, and divestation, etc. for 44 years. It is nice to see some of the nice things that people are doing now to allow us to overcome our thoughts and feelings that are traped inside us survivors. I to have severe PTSD, and just starting to get help. I have found many sites that are up lifting, about the Vietnam War. I still find it very hard to talk about the details of the war, but with nice people helping me I will be normal some day. Please visit the Brovo Troop 1/9 cav. 1st. Cavalry sites and see for yourself the worriors we were once to provide for the freedum that we have today. I like to think that us worriors at least did some good for the vietnamise. Each day I and others in my unit of 6 men would give up 1/2 of our food to the vietnamese children or parents, that is what keeps me sane today. Thank You, Tommy.

Comments: I was one of 5 survivors on the YFU-78 the night of February 27, 1969. Four of us were playing cards in the mess decks, with one man watching. He and I had the midnight watch and we were expecting to leave any minute. Charlie our cook was sitting beside me next to the starboard hatch when we were hit. He didn't make it and the other four of us swam out the port hatch. The boat sank in seconds and the last to come out was the gunners mate. He was in the PO3 compartment beside the port hatch. The 4 of us from the mess decks got to shore by the pilings near the ramps just before the gunner made it to shore. My leg had a sizable chunk out of my thigh and we were talking about what to do about it when our backload began to erupt. By then my leg was numb and the gunner put me over his shoulder and he and the other 3 ran. I watched as our boat was blowing up. I remember a lot more but there was a second or two between seeing my great hand of Spades and all went black. I had been sitting in the bench by the starboard bulkhead at the mess deck table. I next was sitting in my partners swivel chair looking back at the the torn starboard hatch and bulkhead, flames, smoke and disappearing emergency lights. Water was already up to my ankles before I stood up to see if my leg would work. During a brief yelling back and forth as to what to do, I had yelled to go out the port hatch and yelled for others to follow until I was under water. I had yelled when I went under and was out of breath. Boot camp training kicked in and I went up to the overhead between beams for air. When I pushed down and toward the hatch my left foot stepped on the lip of the hatch. The hatch must have been blown open and as I came out I looked up and could see the surface. I have always wondered about how that night went down. I have read several accounts of what some think happened. I can only account for the fact we didn't know anything was amiss and suddenly we were sinking and trying to survive.

Comments: Long story made short....I got to the Nam in early Aug,1969. On or about Aug.12th.69 while still at 1st.Mar.Div. HQ I was in my first combat when HQ was attacked by NVA/VC ground troops, Rockets, etc. The last rocket fired by the enemy hit within a few yards of my fighting position. We later collected the enemy dead and transported them to a location near the front Gate. The dead enemy were thrown off the trucks where me and some other FNGs lined them up in rows where we searched them for intel. A few days later after I went to NAC after which I went out to An Hoa Combat Base. Later to Hill 65, then Hill 52, then later to Hill 65 again until I left the Nam.

Comments:  I was stationed with the 156th H.E.M. at Marble Mountain, Da Nang on May 5th, 1968 when we were attacked by a 122mm rocket that hit our tent. 5 men were killed, I was the only one standing up within 40 feet of the rocket impact and was not wounded "Physically" but still suffer memories and night mares from having to pick up body parts after that. Interseste in hearing from other vets in the 156th During May, 1968. My Mos was 34G20 (FADAC) Field ARtillery Digital Automatic Computer Repairman. Was sent first to Pleiku to a Signal Unit, by mistake, stayed there one month then on to Da Nang, another mistake, stayed there about a month, then to Phu Bai to the 578th L.E.M. for 9 months TDY. Comments: Graduated from M.C.R.D. San Diego in June '66 departed San Diego on board the U.S.N.S. Barrett arriving in Danang harbor about 29Oct.'66 . Was put on a c130 at about midnight for flight to Chu-lai. Next day assigned to Hdq. Btry. 4-11 just north of the Chu-lai airbase accross from "mike" btry. Put in comm. ctr. because i could type. 4 months later sent to "L" btry. about 8 miles further north sharing a hill "54" or "55" with i believe 1/5.  In April we went down to the beach at Chu-Lai and were transported up to Danang and then convoyed down to Hoi-An and added on to a large perimeter with i believe 1/1 other arty. ontos,and tanks. I volunteered for some security duty at the division c.p. not knowing what it would be. It turned out to be M.P. Co. with Hdq. Bn. inside the division c.p. which was right next to the c.a.p. headquarters and right behind the enlisted/nco club. I am trying to locate a GEORGE W. DIETZ who was in that unit when i arrived. I contacted him in the early 1992, he was living in Fort Luderdale, Fl. We exchanged some photos from the war. He was previously assigned to hotel 1/5 i belive, and the photos were from his time in that unit. Anyone knowing him or how i can return the photos to him would be appreciated. My wife and i returned to Vietnam in 1999 for 2-3 weeks, and again in 2004 and spent 4 weeks in country traveling from Sapa in the north to Saigon in the south. Comments: The photos you took of the country side and war children were very moving. My uncle was a river rat in about '68 ,'69? He dropped navy seals behind enemy lines and played accordian in the navy band. He was on leave once when I was about 2 yrs old. He was bouncing me up and down on his shoulders in front of my grandmas living room mirror and I puked on his head, he will never let me forget, lol! Just so the story is straight I was told I had a fever earlier in the day. I love all my war uncles alive and deceased. Thank you!

Comments: I was in Da Nang May 68-Mar 69. Lived in barracks by the Army Depot on China Beach. Just up from the PX area, across from Army Hospital and mortuary. I worked at the Navy Supply Yard as a laison to expedite navy support to Army. Navy food was so much better than Army. Tried to get billets on Navy there to but my Sgt would only let me chow there. Knew a lot of Navy, Marines, AF and Army but can only remember a few. Mostly remember faces and events shared.

Comments: I was in Danang in 1970, first in Danang ICS site, the US 37th Signal Battalion, as detached ARVN Signal Corps soldier for on site training. Late 1971, I was transferred to Monkey Mountain ICS site (known as Tropo), a site on the side of the mountain. I was staying there to see all US troops withdrawing, the compounds some taken over by ARVN, some left abandoned, later until I ran away from the coming of NVA tanks on 29 of March 1975. I returned on the fireworks displaying night of March 28, 2010, climbing on the hill the next day upto the old site of AFVN.

If anyone remembers Christmas 1970 at China Beach, I stole the CO's Jeep and used it to run guys to funhouse down the street. I didn't want anyone getting hurt by cowboys while on a drunk R&R skivvy run. The old man woke up and caught me on the last run. He was cool and only gave me an article 15. Comments: MY DAD IS A VIETNAM VETERAN HE SERVED FROM 9-15-71/04-05-73 HE SAYS THAT HE WAS IN DA NANG AS A CARRIER BUT HIS PAPERS SAY HE WAS A RADIO MECHANIC MY DAD HAS SUFFERED FROM A ILLNESS CALLED PTSD ME AND MY FAMILY WALK ON EGGSHELLS BECAUSE OF HIS PTSD HE DOES NOT ATTEND FAMILY EVENT OR EVEN GO TO THE STORES CROWDED AREAS OR LOUD NOISES ALL HIS GRANDKIDS HAVE TO B QUIET IN THE HOUSE THE OTHER DAY I TOOK HIM TO WAL-MART FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 11YRS BUT IT WAS LIKE 5:00 IN THE MORNING HE WAS LIKE A KID IN A CANDY STORE!! HE KEPT SAYIN WOW ALL THIS NEW STUFF THEY HAVE INVENTED I SAT BACK AND CRIED BECAUSE ALL HE HAS MISSED! WHEN HE HEARS HELICOPTERS HE DUCKS AND HAS TO SEE WHERE IT IS IN THE AIR.. AT NIGHT HE SOMETIMES GETS FLASHBACKS IM THE LITTLEST OF 4 BUT FOR THE LAST 6 YRS I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET HIM HIS BENEFITS AND ITS BEEN SO HARD FOR ME. HE REALLY SAYS THAT EVERYTHING IS A BLUR TO HIM SO I JUST GO BY WHAT HE TELLS ME. LET ME SHARE A STORY W/U ABOUT WHAT HE SAYS." HE WAS IN DA NANG AND TRAVELED TO ALMOST ALL THE LITTLE CITYS AROUND WHERE HE WAS ORDERED TO GO HE SAYS THAT HIS JOB WAS VERY LONLEY HE NEVER STAYED TO LONG IN ONE SPOT. SO HE REMEMBERS ON ONE INCIDENT HE WAS IN A HELICOPTER AND THE OTHERS TOLD HIM THAT HE NEEDED TO SIT ON HIS FLIGHT JACKET FOR PROTECTION BECAUSE THE ENEMIES WERE SHOOTING UP IN THE AIR. ANOTHER IS HE WAS DRIVING INTO COMPOUND IN DA NANG WHEN IN 3 CARS IN FRONT OF HIM A DEUCE 1/2 WAS BLOWN UP HE SAID THAT SOMEONE HAD PUT A GRANADE IN THE GAS TANK. HE TALKS ABOUT A FRIEND THAT HE HAD. HE GOT SHOT IN HIS HEAD IN FRONT OF HIM. MY DAD DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO READ OR WRITE BUT HE SAYS THAT ON HIS TAGS IT HAD A L ON IT HES NOT SURE IF IT WAS LOPEZ OR SOMETHING ELSE. Comments: I was a seaman aboard the YFU 67 from about June 1967 to Jan. 1968. We had just returned form Cua Viet River when we saw one of our ships sunk in the river. The next morning at Da Nang they wanted to know if I wanted to go back to the USA early. They didn't have to ask twice.

Comments:  I am not a veteran, but I am the pround decendent of one. My great-uncle BM1 Manuel Martinez died on the bridge ramp on 02/27/1969. He was my mother's favorite uncle and sadly our family lost touch with his wife. My mother was only 10 years old when he died and has no photographs of her beloved uncle. We are looking for anyone who may have served with him and has photos to share with our family. The state of New Mexico has put out a call for anyone who has pictures to help set up a memorial with pictures of every soldier lost from our state. Sadly, we have been unable to locate any photos for the memorial and our mother. Comments: I am not the Veteran, My Husband was. He passed away in 2000. Isn't Ironic, He did not recieve 100% disability until his death and I decided somebody was going to pay for his pain and suffering due to Viet Nam. he was seriously wounded in Viet Nam and lived with PTSD all the rest of his life. My family and I walked on Egg shells everyday, never knowing when he would become irritated or mad but I could not give up on him. Iknew the real Rick and I knew who had done this to him. The Viet Nam Veterans have been my pet Peeve since 1972 when Rick and I got together. I am so defensive when it comes to my veterans. This country should be ashame and could never give back what they took from you guys. He has been gone for over 9 years now, and my heart still crys for what he went through. I ask him once why did he volunteer to go to that God awful place, why not let them draft him or take off and dodge the draft and he remarked " to keep them off American soil and keep it out of our front door", now that 911 happened, I know exactly what he was saying. You vets hold your head high, sing it loud, sing it long, God bless each and every one of you. I send Love to all of you, I send you Hope and praise. God Bless our Vets.

Comments: I was on the YFU-78 February 27, 1969. I was one of the wounded and one of 5 that survived that night. Still looking for answers and pictures and just recently stumbled onto things I never found before. We 5 made it to shore just seconds before the explosives went off. I decoded the message for that backload earlier that afternoon and in part it said - top secret, high explosives, destination Hue. From what I heard as we were being loaded there was a variety of plastic explosives, dynamite, caps, black powder, etc. I remember sitting in the mess decks playing cards with 3 of the other survivors when everything went black. I came to seeing fire, smoke and water coming up my legs. Before we got out we were completely under water but somehow 5 of us survived.

I was told that it was the 1/st, m/d, camp 65,I-con camp Pendaltonon, CA . The cold name was Blue Diamond .I am looking for some Marine might remember us we took them to PI, Japan for there R,R,. Then take then back to Nam .Take to dun ha suply base or some other place. There Sgt got killed in 67,I was trying to think of his name I meet couple of the Marine that we became friend.My memory is not that good any more. I would to talk to some guy thanks

Comments: My late great father in law, Richard L. Haston, did 3 tours in Nam, not exactly sure of the years but it was around 65-68 or so. He was called "Doc Haston" by many and was assigned to a Marine unit and did his 1st tour, went to dive school in Key West, and became a member of Force Recon where he served 2 more grueling tours. He saved a lot of lives and got shot 3 times in the process. He received 3 Purple Hearts. Richard died in 1989 of a rare lung cancer caused by Agent Orange. Me or my son never got to meet him but my 12 year old son is determined to follow in his footsteps. We think of Granddad Richard as a hero and are proud of him. My husband had a few paperback books where friends and fellow soldiers talked about Richard's bravery and mentioned him also as a good friend. Those books have been lost. My husband, Richard's son, had a rough childhood growing up in "boot camp" and with all that goes with having a super Marine dad (maybe a little PTSD?.) My husband killed himself in 2000 at 29 yrs of age. My son's namesake is Richard after his exceptional USMC granddad and we are very interested in hearing from his comrades in battle or those buddies that remember him. I have read your page and have shed more than a few tears. I didn't grow up in a military family so I didn't really realize the intensity and sadness of this war...just what I learned in school. I have to admit that as a mother I am afraid for my son to enlist. He has even mentioned wanting to be Force Recon. For you mothers out there, I would like some input on how to let your babies go away and you might never see them again. This child of mine is the last male Haston of this line of tough men so you can understand my concern. Comments:  I received the Vietnam Service Medal because on four occasions in 1969 while a passenger in a C-54 aircraft we took small arms fire on the plane while landing and taking off at DaNang AB, RVN. I spent a total of 6 months in Southeast Asia supporting the war effort. My 6 hours spent in DaNang (3 hours each time we landed) was full of excitement and also fear of the unknown

In-country Dec 1967-Sep 68 4th Bn. 3rd Inf Rgt (Old Guard) 11th LIB Americal Division.I spent my first three months rotating between Bravo & Delta off of LZ Sue. Aid station on Hill 54 and LZ Bronco. In March was sent to Chu Lai as Casualty reporter for Bn and TF Barker. I evaluated, assessed and interviewed the wounded then headed to GR to assess and evaluate the KIA's, phone in a report to S-2 and send a hard copy to BN and Brigade by mail.I spent 3 weeks in Danang at the NSA Hospital and it has just occured to me that I may have been sent to do a little R & R as there were only 1 or 2 of our grunts in the hospital. I spent much time on the beach. I have a photo of myself surrounded by kids with Monkey Mountain in the background.

Comments:  Was on top of Monkey mountain with COMSEVENTHFLT Det "C" for six moths in 1967. This is a nice site. Brought back the memories of travelling up that winding road. Remembered being told to never walk up! Rock Apes!! Left The mountain in 1968 and went down to the Mobile Rivine Force as RM3 on A-91-3 ASPB Patrol Boat on the Mekong River.
